Airport Scuffle: Labour Party supporters clash in Abuja over alleged attack on Abure
Supporters of the Labour Party (LP) clashed at the domestic wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Saturday, sparking confusion over allegations of assault.
The altercation reportedly involved loyalists of the party’s embattled National Chairman, Julius Abure, and Ms. Precious Oruche, popularly known on social media as “Mama P,” a vocal member of the Obidient Movement.
While the cause of the fracas remains unclear, both camps have traded accusations over who instigated the confrontation.
“Mama P” alleged in a Facebook post that Abure’s supporters attacked her before and after a flight from Abuja to Benin on Friday.”
“But in a counter statement signed by Obiora Ifoh, the factional LP National Publicity Secretary, Abure’s camp accused Oruche of verbally and physically assaulting the chairman during the flight.
“The leadership of the Labour Party is perplexed by the physical attack on our National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, by agents suspected to be working for anti-democratic elements,” Ifoh said. He claimed Oruche accosted Abure at the airport, harassed him during the flight, and continued recording the confrontation upon arrival in Benin until security operatives intervened.
According to Ifoh, Oruche boasted of her connections within the police hierarchy and vowed not to relent in her attacks against Abure and the party leadership, accusing them of “killing the Labour Party” and sidelining Peter Obi.
The Labour Party leadership has called on the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the incident, identify Oruche’s alleged sponsors, and ensure those involved are brought to justice.
They also urged party members to remain calm while awaiting the outcome of the investigation.
