APC wins Kano Municipal, Ungogo By-Elections
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has clinched the two seats contested in Saturday’s by-elections in Kano Municipal and Ungogo local government areas of Kano State.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Nabil Aliyu Daneji winner of the Kano Municipal constituency seat after he polled 7,484 votes to defeat eight other contestants. The Returning Officer, Professor Ibrahim Tajo Siraj, announced the result following the collation of votes from the affected polling units.
In Ungogo constituency, the Returning Officer, Professor Ali Tijjani Abdullahi, declared Aminu Sa’ad Sa’ad winner after securing 8,975 votes to beat other candidates in the race. Abdullahi said the outcome reflected the will of the people, commending political parties, observers and voters for their cooperation throughout the exercise.
However, the Kwankwasiyya movement offered a different political angle to the outcome. The group stated that the two APC candidates were originally nominated under the banner of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) by its national leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso, before their eventual defection to the APC.
In a statement signed by its spokesman, Habibu Sale Mohammed, the movement explained that Kwankwaso had supported the nomination of the candidates as a tribute to their late fathers, who reportedly died on the same day while serving in the Kano State House of Assembly on the NNPP platform.
The statement noted that the decision to back the lawmakers’ sons was taken in recognition of their fathers’ sacrifices and commitment to the party, describing it as an act of compassion and honour.
The by-elections were conducted to fill the vacancies created by the demise of the former legislators, with the APC ultimately emerging dominant in both constituencies.
