The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has intensified its criticism of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), calling for the resignation of its Chairman, Joash Amupitan, over alleged bias ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, accused the electoral body of siding with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that it can no longer be trusted to conduct credible polls.

“We demand the immediate resignation or sack of the INEC Chairman, Professor Amupitan, and all the National Commissioners. We no longer have confidence in them. We are convinced that they are incapable of conducting any credible election,” Mark said.

The ADC’s reaction follows INEC’s recent decision to derecognise factions within the party amid its lingering leadership crisis.

Despite the development, Mark maintained that the party would proceed with its scheduled congresses and convention, noting that INEC’s presence is not a legal requirement.

“We have duly served INEC notice, and we will proceed accordingly,” he stated.

He also called on the international community to take note of what he described as troubling actions by the electoral body, warning of implications for Nigeria’s democratic stability.

“We urge them to recognise the clear threat to Nigeria’s democracy and stability, and to hold accountable those who are undermining the integrity of the electoral process,” he added.

Mark further appealed to Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively defend democratic principles, cautioning against any attempt to impose a one-party system.

“This is a defining moment. Stand firm. Speak out. Participate. Resist any attempt to impose a one-party state on Nigeria. Nigeria belongs to all of us,” he said.
