BREAKING: Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, dies at 71
Former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad (rtd.), has passed away at the age of 71. He died at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, just about two weeks before his 72nd birthday, which would have been on 31 December.
The news of his death was confirmed in Abuja by the Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS) in a condolence statement. The association described his passing as a monumental loss to the Nigerian judiciary, the legal profession, the Muslim Ummah, and the nation at large.
“Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return,” the statement read. NAMLAS highlighted Justice Muhammad’s towering integrity, humility, and unwavering commitment to justice, noting that he exemplified fairness, courage, and fidelity to the rule of law throughout his judicial career.
As Chief Justice of Nigeria from 2019 until his retirement in 2022, Muhammad discharged his duties with wisdom and restraint, leaving a legacy that will continue to guide generations of legal practitioners.
Beyond his judicial service, he played a significant role as a mentor to young Muslim law students nationwide, being described as a fatherly figure and source of encouragement.
NAMLAS extended condolences to his family, the Nigerian judiciary, the Federal Government, and the Muslim Ummah, praying for the repose of his soul. Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad’s career remains a distinguished chapter in Nigeria’s legal history, marked by dedication, discipline, and commitment to justice.
