IGP Disu urges Police Officers to uphold integrity during surprise visit to NUJ FCT

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has urged officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to uphold integrity and accountability in the discharge of their duties.

Disu made the call during a surprise visit to members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, at the union’s secretariat in Utako, Abuja over the weekend.

The unannounced visit caught journalists off guard as the nation’s top police officer arrived at the congress meeting, where he was received with cheers, applause and excitement from members of the union.

Journalists present at the congress welcomed the police chief with enthusiastic chants, describing him as “our father,” “a round peg in a round hole,” and an “action man,” in apparent admiration of his leadership style.

Responding to the warm reception, the IGP called on senior police officers across the country, including Commissioners of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General, Divisional Police Officers and Inspectors, to reflect on their service records and remain accountable for their actions while in office.

He urged them to conduct themselves in a manner that would allow them to confidently defend their service to the nation.

According to him, officers should always be able to “beat their chests” and say they served Nigerians with honesty, professionalism and integrity wherever they had been deployed.

Disu emphasised that modern policing must be people-centered, stressing the need for officers to adopt a humane approach in their dealings with members of the public.

He further advised police personnel to build trust within the communities they serve and strive to leave behind positive memories through their conduct.

The police chief noted that respect and cooperation from citizens can only be earned when law enforcement officers demonstrate fairness, discipline and professionalism in carrying out their responsibilities.

He also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the police and the media, noting that such partnership is essential in promoting security awareness, transparency and national development.
