China showcases advanced Missiles, Drones, Laser Weapons at Beijing Military parade
China unveiled a display of cutting-edge military technology, including underwater drones, long-range missiles, and laser weapons, during a large-scale military parade in Beijing on Wednesday, marking 80 years since the nation’s victory over Japan in World War II.
The event, attended by foreign leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, underscored China’s growing military ambitions as tensions with the United States persist.
In his address before the parade at Tiananmen Square, President Xi Jinping hailed China as “unstoppable” while rows of advanced military equipment rolled past cheering crowds to patriotic music. Among the highlights was the debut of the DF-5C intercontinental ballistic missile, part of the Dongfeng series, which state media claims can strike anywhere on Earth.
The parade also showcased two new unmanned underwater vehicles, the AJX002 and HSU100, which defence experts say are designed for reconnaissance and minelaying. Analysts note that China has developed the world’s most extensive programme of extra-large uncrewed underwater vehicles.
Several hypersonic-capable anti-ship missiles — the YJ-15, YJ-17, YJ-19, and YJ-20 — were also displayed, alongside laser defence systems, including the LY-1, touted as one of the most advanced of its kind. The parade further featured unmanned surface, air, and land vehicles intended for reconnaissance, logistics, and mine warfare.
Radar systems were prominently showcased, with the KJ-600 early warning aircraft making its public debut, expected to be deployed on China’s Fujian aircraft carrier soon. The extensive display reflects Beijing’s efforts to modernise its military and project global power through advanced weapons systems.
