Court summons key witnesses in $6.23m fraud trial of ex-CBN Governor Emefiele
Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court has summoned two key witnesses to testify in the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, over an alleged $6.23 million fraud case.
The witnesses, Jim Obazee and Eloho Okpoziakpo, are expected to appear before the court on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, following a subpoena issued on April 27, 2026.
Emefiele is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on an amended 20-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust, forgery, abuse of office, and conspiracy to obtain money by false pretence.
In the court order, Justice Muazu directed the witnesses to appear at 9:00 a.m. and continue attending proceedings until the conclusion of the trial. They are also expected to tender evidence, including newspaper publications linked to the controversial naira redesign policy.
The court noted that both witnesses were involved in investigations that led to the charges against the former CBN boss and are expected to clarify key issues surrounding the policy and the alleged diversion of funds.
The case is part of ongoing high-profile proceedings in which prosecutors allege financial misconduct involving $6.23 million purportedly linked to election-related expenses and other administrative approvals during Emefiele’s tenure at the apex bank.
