FCT Girls dominate, advance to MILO Basketball finals
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Girls’ Basketball Team has been crowned regional champions at the 25th MILO National Secondary School Basketball Championship, securing a coveted spot in the national finals scheduled to take place later this year in Ibadan.
The victorious team, representing Government Secondary School, Karu, displayed outstanding skill and tenacity, overcoming strong competition from Kaduna and Niger States. Their dominant performances in both the semi-final and final matches earned them the regional title and national qualification.
In a parallel achievement, the FCT Boys’ Team from Government Secondary School, Gwarimpa made a remarkable debut by finishing as first runners-up in their maiden appearance at the competition.
Presenting the winning teams to the Secretary for Education, the Director of School Sports at the FCT Education Secretariat, Malam Hashimu Adamu, commended the students for their resilience and discipline throughout the championship. He described their journey as rigorous and applauded their determination and sportsmanship.
While receiving the teams, Secretary for Education, Dr Danlami Hayyo, expressed pride in the students’ achievements, noting that their success had placed the FCT firmly in the national spotlight.
“You have brought the FCT into the limelight through the outstanding performance of both our boys’ and girls’ teams,” Dr Hayyo stated. He assured the players of the FCT Administration’s full support ahead of the finals, adding that no effort would be spared to ensure their continued success.
Dr Hayyo further highlighted that the teams’ performances reflected the Honourable Minister’s commitment to school sports development, reinforcing the FCT’s goal of producing well-rounded students who excel both academically and in extracurricular activities.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Director of the FCT Secondary Education Board, Dr Sani Mohammed Ladan, reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to nurturing young talent through quality training and sustained support. He expressed confidence in the teams’ ability to bring the national trophy home.

Responding on behalf of their teammates, team captains Diouf Fatima (GSS Karu) and Edward Okafor (GSS Gwarimpa) expressed gratitude to the FCT Administration for its support. They pledged to uphold the values of discipline and excellence while proudly representing the FCT and Nigeria.
The regional tournament, held in Abuja, featured spirited competition among several leading schools, including Father O’Connell Science College (Minna), Zarumai Model School (Minna), NDA Staff Secondary School (Kaduna), Younik Academy (Lafia), and others.
In recognition of their achievements, the teams received cash prizes, basketballs, Nestlé gift packs, a trophy, and certificates of participation.
