Flamingos targets First-Leg win against Algeria in U-17 World Cup Qualifier
Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, are setting their sights on a dominant performance as they face Algeria in the first leg of their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final qualifying round on Saturday.
Head Coach Bankole Olowookere, while speaking with the media unit of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), disclosed that the team’s goal is to secure a comfortable win in the opening leg at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne. The strategy, he said, is to reduce pressure ahead of the second leg scheduled for next week in Blida, Algeria.
“We’ve worked hard to correct the mistakes from our games against South Africa. The girls are confident, and we are ready to get a good result on home soil,” Olowookere stated.
The Flamingos recently proved their strength at the same venue with a 2-0 victory over South Africa’s Bantwana, having earlier secured a 3-1 away win in Pretoria. The Remo Stars Stadium has become a fortress for Nigerian women’s football, also serving as the venue for the Super Falcons’ 2-0 friendly win over Algeria last October.
With the return leg set for Friday, April 25, in Blida, the Flamingos hope to carry a comfortable lead to North Africa as they aim to book a spot at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
All eyes will be on the young Nigerian squad this weekend as they look to take a big step toward qualification.
