Ghana Premier League footballer Dominic Frimpong killed in Armed robbery attack
A Ghanaian Premier League footballer, Dominic Frimpong, has been killed after armed robbers attacked his team while they were returning from an away fixture on Sunday night.
The Ghana Football Association confirmed the incident on Monday, describing it as a tragic loss to Ghana football.
His club, Berekum Chelsea FC, said masked men armed with guns and assault rifles ambushed the team bus, opening fire and forcing players and officials to abandon the vehicle and flee into nearby bushes for safety. Ghana police said the attack occurred around 10:30 p.m. local time on the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District of the Ashanti Region.
Police confirmed that Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds during the attack and was later pronounced dead while receiving treatment in hospital. Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was also robbed of 4,500 cedis (about $408), according to police.
The Ghana Football Association described the incident as a “huge loss” to both the club and Ghana football, saying Frimpong was a promising young player whose dedication reflected the spirit of the league.
The 20-year-old forward had joined Berekum Chelsea FC on loan from Aduana Stars FC at the beginning of the year and had made 13 appearances, scoring two goals before his death. Police say investigations are ongoing into the attack, which has raised fresh concerns about highway insecurity in parts of the country.
