Gov Yusuf’s ally Umar Doguwa emerges APC chairman in Kano
A political ally of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, Umar Haruna Doguwa, has emerged as the new Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.
Doguwa, a former Commissioner for Water Resources, was affirmed at the party’s state congress held at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium, where delegates adopted a consensus arrangement for the emergence of new executives.
He succeeds Abdullahi Abbas, who had served as chairman for over a decade.
Consensus Election
The congress, presided over by national party official Latep Dabang, saw 2,420 delegates from the 44 local government areas of the state affirm 36 executives through consensus rather than balloting.
Dabang explained that although ballot boxes had been prepared, stakeholders resolved to adopt consensus, a decision he said was welcomed by delegates. The newly elected officials are to steer the party’s affairs for the next four years.
Among those elected alongside Doguwa are Salisu Maje Ahmed Gwangwazo (Vice Chairman), Prof. Yusuf Mohammed Bichi (Secretary), Nura Yaro (Assistant Secretary), Abdul Adamu Fagge, SAN (Legal Adviser), Barr. Bashir Yusuf (Assistant Legal Adviser), Kabiru Sule Rogo (Treasurer), Umar Yusuf Umar (Assistant Treasurer), Ma’aruf Abdullahi Garo (Financial Secretary), Mustafa Muhammad Kalwa (Assistant Financial Secretary), Dr. Kabiru Zawaciki (Organising Secretary), and Barr. Abdulsalam Umar (Assistant Organising Secretary), among others.
2027 Focus
In his acceptance speech, Doguwa pledged to work towards strengthening party unity and delivering victory for the APC in the 2027 general elections at both state and national levels.
The outgoing chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, urged members to rally behind the new leadership, expressing confidence that the party would secure electoral victories in 2027.
The congress was attended by prominent political figures, including Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Jibrin Falgore, former Minister of Housing and Urban Development Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo, and other party stalwarts.
The development signals the APC’s renewed push to consolidate its structure in Kano ahead of the next electoral cycle.
