Governor Diri dismisses rumours linking him to Nengi’s pregnancy

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has firmly denied social media rumours suggesting he is responsible for the pregnancy of reality TV star, Nengi Ha
e speculation, which recently gained traction online, claimed that Nengi had given birth to the governor’s child, with some reports even alleging that he has multiple wives.
On Monday, social media became flooded with these claims, particularly due to Nengi’s previous appointment as Senior Special Assistant on Girl Child Development by Governor Diri in 2020.
However, in a swift response, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Samuel Oredipe, took to Facebook on Tuesday to dismiss the allegations, labelling them as “fake news” spread by “wicked people.”
Oredipe stated that the relationship between the governor and Nengi remains strictly professional, accusing political opponents of using the rumours to tarnish Diri’s reputation, especially as his administration marks its fifth anniversary.
He wrote, “Political enemies of His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State, are at work again. What a wicked set of people spreading falsehoods on a day the Prosperity Administration commenced activities marking its fifth anniversary.
Nengi Rebecca Hampson has no personal relationship with Governor Diri, and it is regrettable that purveyors of fake news are unhappy with the governor’s rising political profile. Nengi herself has publicly refuted these falsehoods.
This is nothing but a distraction, and it reinforces the need for stricter regulations on the use of social media.
Sadly, while we were inaugurating a brand-new road in Yenagoa, social media ‘e-rats’ were busy peddling baseless gossip. Governor Diri is a man of honour and dignity.”
Nengi also addressed the controversy on her X (formerly Twitter) account, expressing frustration over the false reports and making it clear that the allegations were entirely untrue.
She wrote, “As much as I believe social media lies aren’t worth my time, I’ve come to accept that we live in a world where people are quick to spread falsehoods without limits. So, let me be clear—I am not pregnant for any governor.
I’ve chosen to speak up because this isn’t just an attack on me; it involves people I hold in the highest regard, and I won’t allow a beautiful, personal part of my life to be twisted into something ugly. While I continue to mind my business and enjoy my pregnancy in peace, I wish you all love and a happy Valentine’s weekend.”
The controversy emerges at a time when Governor Diri’s administration is celebrating five years in office. His aides believe the rumours are a calculated attempt to distract from his achievements and ongoing developmental projects in Bayelsa State.
