One killed, others injured as IED explosion hits Kwara community
Fresh fears have gripped residents of Woro community following an improvised explosive device (IED) blast that killed one person and left others injured on Monday morning.
The Kwara State Government confirmed the incident, describing it as a troubling development in a region already facing security challenges.
Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, said the explosive device detonated along a road outside the community as a vehicle passed over it.
“The IED went off as a vehicle drove over it on Monday morning,” Ajakaye said, noting that the explosion occurred some distance from the community.
He disclosed that a male occupant of the vehicle died on the spot, while a woman and her child who were also in the vehicle were affected by the blast. The woman sustained injuries and has been taken to a medical facility where she is responding to treatment, while the child escaped unharmed.
The incident has heightened tension in the area, with residents expressing renewed fears over their safety amid lingering insecurity.
Also confirming the development, ZulQharnain Shero Musa, Special Assistant on Media to the Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area, said the explosion resulted in casualties, although the exact number is yet to be fully determined.
“There was an explosion around Woro this morning which claimed lives, but the exact number of casualties is still unclear,” Musa said.
He added that preliminary findings suggest the explosive device may have been planted by suspected insurgents.
