Handover Note!

A few days ago, while searching for a particular document, I came across a photocopy of the handover note I had written and submitted to the Head of Central Administration at a renowned international faith-based ministry where I worked over a decade ago.

It was intriguing to me because it made me reflect on the importance and significance of that document. I thought about how even the staff members who would join the organisation long after I had left would not only be aware that I had worked there in the past, but they would also clearly see my impact—my contributions, the challenges I encountered in the role, and how I was able to overcome them.

Staff members who would take over the position I once occupied would have me as a strong and dependable reference, and even as a trustworthy mentor they could still consult if they encountered any difficulties while stepping into the role I had once held.

Leaving a handover note after completing an assignment or holding an office places you in a position of honour and responsibility. It demonstrates transparency and care for the future growth of the organisation, regardless of who assumes leadership after your tenure. It also establishes you as a mentor and consultant—someone who will be gladly and enthusiastically sought out by those who step into the position after you.

We should always consider posterity and the future in all our decisions, actions, and inactions. Holding a position, even for just a day, places upon us the responsibility of stewardship, for every leadership role that God allows us to hold is a position of trust. We are all stewards of God—stewards of the grace, opportunities, and privileges that He grants us throughout our journey on earth, whether in family leadership, politics, professional life, or spiritual matters. We must all give an account and be intentionally accountable—that is the honourable thing to do.

Leadership is about accountability. If you are not ready and willing to be accountable to God and to the people you lead, then you should stay away from leadership positions. Leadership is not for those who perceive a call for accountability as an insult or an act of disrespect.

Leaving a handover note is not just about the situation you inherited when you assumed leadership of a department, office, or organisation—it is about you. It reflects your fundamental values, integrity, self-respect, and, above all, your genuine commitment to the continued growth and well-being of an organisation that once gave you a platform to express your talents, skills, and capabilities.

If you are preparing to move on from a department, office, or organisation—regardless of whether your predecessor or the organisation provided you with guidance when you took over—you have the power to set the right precedent. Be a trailblazer worthy of emulation. Ensure that you leave a handover note when your tenure comes to an end. Posterity will judge you on that. Never forget it!
