IGP recalls over 11,000 Police officers from VIP protection duties

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the withdrawal of more than 11,000 police officers previously assigned to Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country.

Egbetokun said the officers were recalled to strengthen core policing responsibilities and boost security presence in communities. According to him, the measure is part of ongoing reforms aimed at improving the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force to respond more effectively to emerging security challenges.

He explained that the widespread deployment of officers to VIPs had overstretched available manpower, leaving critical areas under-policed. The withdrawal, he noted, will allow for better distribution of personnel to high-risk and underserved locations.

The IGP added that VIPs requiring security escorts would now be directed to seek protection through approved channels, while the police focus on restoring adequate patrol, intelligence gathering and rapid-response operations nationwide.

The redeployed officers are expected to resume duties at their new postings immediately as the force intensifies efforts to enhance safety and maintain public order.
