Join fight against sexual and gender based violence, Female Journalists urged

President-General of the Nigeria Market Women and Men’s Association, Chief Mrs. Felicia Sani, has urged female journalists across the country to join in the fight against sex and gender-based violence.
Sharing her wealth of experience with the leadership of the FCT chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Madam Sani said female journalists have a vital role to play in the fight against all forms of domestic violence because they serve as powerful voices for women and girls across Nigeria.
She expressed deep concern over the rising cases of sexual and gender-based violence, particularly targeting underage girls, and urged female journalists to leverage their platforms to challenge harmful gender norms and drive meaningful societal change.
She also called on mothers to instil strong moral values in their daughters and to be vigilant in safeguarding their children from those who may pose a threat.
Addressing what she called the Uncle Syndrome, she emphasised the importance of empowering victims to speak out despite the intimidation and threats often faced by perpetrators.
She encouraged journalists to create awareness and dispel fears created by statements like, ‘If you tell someone, you will die,’ and to unite in standing against such intimidation.
She offered prayers for the leadership of NAWOJ FCT, leaving a lasting impression on the attendees.
Chairperson of NAWOJ in the FCT, Bassey Ita Ikpang, expressed gratitude to Madam Felicia for the visit and reaffirmed the association’s unwavering commitment to advocating for the eradication of sexual and gender-based violence.
She said that since assuming office, the current executive has expanded its advocacy efforts into rural communities, empowering women to become self-reliant and assert their rights while promoting healthy and empowered lives.
Bassey Ita Ikpang highlighted NAWOJ’s readiness to collaborate with other women’s groups and organisations to advance the welfare of women and girls, fostering gender equity and social development.
