MLS tightlipped on potential Messi suspension after All-Star game no-show

Major League Soccer (MLS) Commissioner Don Garber has refused to confirm whether Lionel Messi will face sanctions for missing Wednesday’s All-Star game in Austin.
Messi, alongside his Inter Miami teammate Jordi Alba, was expected to start in the high-profile match that saw a combined MLS XI defeat Mexico’s Liga MX All-Stars 3-1.
However, news emerged just hours before kick-off that both Messi and Alba would not be participating, with Miami reportedly informing the league of their absence. No clear explanation was initially given, sparking controversy as MLS rules stipulate that players selected for the All-Star match must play unless excused due to injury or another valid reason. Those who fail to appear without a valid excuse face a mandatory one-game suspension.
Despite speculation, Garber declined to address whether Messi would be suspended, telling reporters before the match, “Anything that’s going to happen as relates to next weekend, we’re not going to talk about today.” He added that the situation was still being managed by the league.
Garber acknowledged that Messi has recently endured a packed playing schedule, participating in nine games across 35 days, including four at the Club World Cup and five in domestic competitions. “Miami’s had a schedule that is unlike any other team,” he said, noting that other clubs had enjoyed a 10-day break which Miami did not.
Still, the commissioner stressed the importance of adhering to league rules. “We would have loved to have Leo here and to have every player that was selected here,” Garber stated, adding that the league should have been notified earlier about Messi’s absence.
The situation comes after Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano indicated at the weekend that both Messi and Alba needed rest. “The players are called up. I’d prefer they rest, but it’s not my decision,” he said, pointing out that the club had not made a final call.
Since joining MLS in 2023, just months after leading Argentina to World Cup glory, Messi has significantly raised the league’s global profile, spiking ticket sales and viewership. His influence is often compared to that of David Beckham, who also had a massive impact on the league during his time with LA Galaxy.
When asked if Beckham remained the most influential figure in MLS history, Garber responded, “MLS wouldn’t be what it is today without David Beckham, but MLS wouldn’t be what it is today without Leo Messi either.”
