NACA calls for responsible valentine’s day celebrations to reduce HIV, STI risk in Nigeria
The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has urged Nigerians to mark Valentine’s Day with responsible choices aimed at preventing HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
In a statement to commemorate the season, NACA Director-General, Dr. Temitope Ilori, encouraged citizens to prioritise their health and that of their partners, describing responsible behaviour as a meaningful expression of love.
While acknowledging Valentine’s Day as a period of affection and connection, Dr. Ilori cautioned against high-risk behaviours such as unprotected sex, having multiple sexual partners, and excessive alcohol or substance use, all of which can increase vulnerability to HIV and other STIs.
She advised Nigerians to know their HIV status by getting tested and to encourage their partners to do the same.
The Director-General also stressed the importance of practising safe sex through consistent and correct condom use as well as avoid risky sexual activities.
Dr. Ilori further called on the public to access HIV prevention, treatment, counselling, and care services available at government health facilities nationwide.
She emphasised that informed decisions were crucial to safeguarding personal health and achieving the national target of ending new HIV infections.
“Let love be guided by responsibility. Knowing your status and protecting yourself and others is a powerful way to show you care,” she stated.
The NACA boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to expanding access to comprehensive HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support services across Nigeria.
