PDP postpones screening of aspirants ahead of 2025 National Convention
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed the screening of aspirants for its 2025 Elective National Convention, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, the postponement was attributed to “unforeseen circumstances.”
Fintiri assured party members that a new date would be announced soon, while apologising for any inconvenience caused by the change.
“A new date will be communicated once fixed. The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement. All aspirants and members of our Party should note the foregoing and be guided accordingly,” the statement read.
He reiterated the committee’s commitment to ensuring a transparent, credible, and seamless convention process.
The PDP’s national convention was initially slated for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
On October 25, the party unveiled a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee, chaired by former Ondo State governorship candidate and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, to vet aspirants for national offices.
The postponement came shortly after former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, declared his bid for the national chairmanship position.
This development follows reports that northern PDP leaders had endorsed former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as their consensus candidate for the same seat.
However, Lamido’s camp and loyalists of another top party figure, Nyesom Wike, reportedly rejected Turaki’s endorsement, citing lack of proper consultation — a sign of growing division within the party, which has faced a series of defections in recent months.
