Press Freedom Vital for Peace, Development – NUJ
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has stressed that press freedom remains vital for peace, democratic stability and national development as the world commemorates World Press Freedom Day 2026.
In a statement issued by its National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the Union reaffirmed the importance of a free, independent and responsible press in strengthening democracy, promoting human rights and supporting national progress.
The NUJ said this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security”, reflects Nigeria’s realities and highlights the role of journalism in fostering peace, accountability and institutional trust.
The Union expressed cautious optimism over improving relations between the Department of State Services (DSS) and the media, noting a decline in reported cases of intimidation, harassment and arbitrary arrests of journalists.
It described the development as a positive step towards strengthening press freedom and democratic accountability in the country.
The NUJ commended the leadership of the DSS, particularly the Director-General, for promoting more professional engagement with the media and stressed that cooperation between security agencies and the press is essential for national peace and security.
However, it urged that the progress be sustained through continuous dialogue, transparency and strict adherence to the rule of law.
The Union also called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to respect the rights of journalists and ensure an enabling environment for media practice without fear or intimidation.
It reaffirmed its commitment to responsible journalism and urged practitioners to uphold the highest ethical standards anchored on accuracy, fairness and public interest.
The NUJ further noted that the media and security institutions are not adversaries but partners in promoting peace, protecting human rights and advancing national development.
The Union called on government, security agencies, the media and citizens to renew their commitment to safeguarding press freedom as a foundation for a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
