Prof. Piwuna emerges new ASUU President
Professor Chris Piwuna from the University of Jos has been elected as the new President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
His emergence was officially announced at the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress, which took place at the University of Benin in Edo State.
With this development, Professor Piwuna succeeds Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, bringing an end to his leadership of the union. In a tightly contested election, Piwuna defeated Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, to clinch the position.
The National Delegates Conference attracted university lecturers from institutions across Nigeria, who gathered to deliberate on pressing issues troubling the country’s higher education sector and to usher in a new set of leaders for the union.
Professor Piwuna’s tenure begins at a decisive period for Nigerian universities, as debates continue on matters such as funding, Earned Academic Allowances for lecturers, increasing staff departures, brain drain, university autonomy, and the need to improve the welfare of academic staff.
