Rivers State Sole Administrator appears before Reps Panel, seeks more time for briefing

The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has appealed to the National Assembly’s Ad-hoc Committee for additional time to properly prepare a detailed report on the current situation in the state, citing the fragile security atmosphere and delicate political environment under the ongoing state of emergency.
Ibas made the appeal on Friday while addressing members of the committee at the National Assembly.
He began by recognising the leadership of the committee and the importance of its oversight role in protecting Nigeria’s democratic and constitutional order.
“Mr. Chairman, please permit me to begin by respectfully acknowledging your leadership and the critical role of this committee in safeguarding the democratic and constitutional integrity of our great nation,” he said.
The Rivers State administrator apologised for his absence at earlier sessions with the committee, clarifying that it was not out of disregard but due to pressing governance challenges.
“I deeply regret my inability to attend earlier engagements with this esteemed committee… Today is exactly 10 days after the first invitation, and in between we’ve had four days of public holidays alongside weekends,” Ibas explained.
He noted the difficulties involved in managing the affairs of a state placed under emergency rule, emphasising that engagements with the National Assembly must be thorough and carefully handled.
“The absence, of course, was not out of disregard, but rather due to the weighty and urgent demands of stabilising governance in a state under a declared emergency,” he added.
While admitting that the situation in Rivers is currently calm, Ibas stressed that it remains “fragile” and requires cautious management.
He, therefore, requested the committee’s understanding and indulgence to allow more time for a well-prepared and comprehensive briefing.
“It is important that any engagement with this committee is done with the depth, accuracy and clarity it rightfully deserves,” the administrator stated.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to fully cooperate with the committee and appreciated both the lawmakers and the media for their continued support. “I remain fully committed to cooperating with the committee and to ensuring that all relevant information is made available in due course.
I want to specially thank Mr. Chairman and the distinguished honourable members of this committee. I also want to thank members of the press for the role they’ve played in supporting the efforts of the federal government,” Ibas concluded.
The Ad-hoc Committee is expected to deliberate on the administrator’s request and communicate its next steps regarding the ongoing oversight of governance in Rivers State.
