Rüdiger apologises after Red Card incident in Copa del Rey final
Antonio Rüdiger has tendered an apology following his red card incident during Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey final clash against Barcelona on Saturday night.
The German defender was shown a straight red card after throwing an object towards the referee in protest of a late foul awarded against teammate Kylian Mbappé.
Rüdiger and Lucas Vázquez, who had both been substituted earlier in the match, reacted angrily from the sidelines, leading to their dismissal.
The heated encounter also saw England midfielder Jude Bellingham receive a red card for dissent as tensions boiled over in the final moments of the match.
In a statement, Rüdiger expressed regret over his behaviour, admitting it was inexcusable.
He apologised to the referee and to fans who were let down by his actions.
Reports suggest Rüdiger could face a suspension ranging from four to twelve matches, and possibly up to a six-month ban if the incident is judged as a severe offence.
