Super Falcons edge South Africa in thrilling Semifinal to reach WAFCON Final

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have secured a place in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a dramatic 2-1 victory over defending champions South Africa on Tuesday, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from defender Michelle Alozie.
With the game seemingly headed for extra time, Alozie sent a long ball into the Banyana Banyana box in the 94th minute.
The ball evaded everyone, including South Africa’s goalkeeper, and sailed into the net, catching the defence off guard and sparking wild celebrations from the Nigerian bench.
The high-stakes semifinal clash, held in Morocco, lived up to its billing as a showdown between two African giants. Nigeria, nine-time WAFCON champions, started on the front foot, creating several chances and almost breaking the deadlock through an early goal-line clearance and a series of vital saves by South Africa’s defenders.
Their persistence paid off in the 44th minute when Folashade Ijamilusi’s cross struck the arm of a South African defender. The referee pointed to the spot, and captain Rasheedat Ajibade stepped up to convert the penalty, handing Nigeria a 1-0 lead going into the halftime break.
South Africa responded strongly in the second half and dominated early proceedings. Their pressure yielded a penalty in the 56th minute after Osinachi Ohale was adjudged to have fouled a South African attacker in the box. Linda Motlhalo made no mistake from the spot, leveling the score at 1-1.
Both sides continued to push for a winner, with their coaches making tactical changes and introducing fresh players. Just as the match appeared destined for extra time, Esther Okoronkwo set up Michelle Alozie, whose lofted effort sealed a last-gasp victory for Nigeria.
The win means the Super Falcons remain on course for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
They now await the winner of the second semifinal between host nation Morocco and Ghana to determine their opponent in the final.
