President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter on Tuesday, citing pressing family matters. The President acknowledged receipt of the letter and expressed appreciation for his service to the nation.

Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, had been serving a four-year tenure expected to end in June 2027, following amendments to the Police Act that allowed him to complete a full term.

In a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu commended the former police chief for his years of service and contributions to national security.

The President praised Egbetokun’s “decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation,” noting his dedication and professionalism in strengthening the country’s internal security framework.

The statement also announced the appointment of Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police, describing him as an experienced officer with strong operational and leadership credentials.

According to the Presidency, the appointment is in line with existing legal provisions and comes at a time when the country faces significant security challenges.

The statement added that President Tinubu will soon convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his nomination will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation in accordance with the Police Act 2020.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving national security and strengthening the Nigeria Police Force to ensure professionalism, accountability, and effective service delivery.
