Tinubu expected back in Nigeria today – Presidency

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected back in Nigeria today, concluding a nearly two-week overseas trip that drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders.

His return was confirmed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who posted the update Monday on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will return home today.”

During his stay abroad, the Presidency maintained that Tinubu remained actively engaged with national affairs. Onanuga had earlier explained that the President traveled from Paris to London over the weekend and had maintained regular contact with senior government officials.

He also reassured Nigerians that the President’s absence was within the timeline previously communicated, and that governance continued effectively in his stead. “The President’s commitment to his duties remains unwavering,” Onanuga said. “We appreciate the public’s concern and assure all Nigerians that governance proceeds without interruption.”

President Tinubu departed Nigeria on April 2, 2025, for a working visit to Paris, with the objective of reviewing the mid-term performance of his administration and evaluating its key milestones. However, his prolonged absence triggered backlash, particularly as security crises intensified across various parts of the country.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, through his media aide Paul Ibe, condemned Tinubu’s continued stay abroad, describing it as “irresponsible” in light of escalating violence. “Tinubu is away while Nigeria burns—daily killings, attacks, and loss of territories. This is deeply troubling,” Atiku said.

Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, also voiced concern, highlighting that over 150 lives were lost in different regions during the President’s time away. “I urge Mr President to quickly suspend whatever he is doing in France and rush home to take responsibility by addressing these disturbing issues,” Obi stated.

Despite the criticism, the All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed the opposition’s comments, insisting that the President remained in charge and that governance had not stalled.
