President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated the construction of a 600-bed hostel at the Bwari Campus of the Nigerian Law School in Abuja, alongside the approval of a new auditorium to accommodate the school’s growing student population.

The project, which will provide separate 300-bed hostels for male and female students, is part of efforts to address the severe accommodation shortage at the institution.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony on Monday, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, described the development as a fulfillment of the promise made by President Tinubu in December 2024 during the launch of staff quarters for the Law School.

“Today, we are here to fulfill the promise Mr. President made. This shows that when you have good leadership, there is nothing difficult in achieving results. Mr. President has shown leadership,” Wike said.

He explained that since the establishment of the Abuja campus in 1997, no administration had made such a significant infrastructural intervention. Wike also revealed that after discussing the limited capacity of the school’s existing auditorium with the President, Tinubu immediately approved the construction of a new one.

“Last night, I tabled this before Mr. President and he immediately approved the construction of another auditorium. This demonstrates that when issues are properly presented, responsive leadership always provides solutions,” he added.

The Minister commended the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, who represented the President at the event, for his dedication to improving the justice sector through initiatives like the digitization of FCT High Courts and support for the Law School.

Wike assured that the hostels would be completed within 12 months, warning contractors against delays or variations.

In his remarks, the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, thanked President Tinubu for approving the project, describing it as a landmark contribution to the development of legal education in Nigeria.

“The construction of these hostels will go a long way in assisting the Nigerian Law School to fulfill its mandate. We are not taking this gesture for granted,” Chiroma said.

He also commended Wike for his continued support for legal education, recalling his contributions to the Graham Douglas Campus in Port Harcourt, the Yenagoa Campus, and the provision of staff quarters and vehicles.

“Posterity will be kind to you when the history of legal education and the justice sector is written in Nigeria,” he told the FCT Minister.

The ceremony was attended by senior officials of the FCT Administration, representatives of the Federal Ministry of Justice, and members of the Council of Legal Education.
