UK appoints Peter Vowles as new High Commissioner to Nigeria
The United Kingdom has appointed veteran diplomat Peter Vowles as its next High Commissioner to Nigeria, with his posting expected to commence in September 2026.
A statement issued by the British Government confirmed that Vowles will succeed the current UK High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, who will remain in office until the transition process is completed.
Vowles brings decades of diplomatic and international development experience to the role. Most recently, he served as the UK Ambassador to Zimbabwe from 2023 to 2026, having previously held the position of Ambassador to Myanmar between 2021 and 2022.
Throughout his career, he has occupied several senior leadership positions within the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the former Department for International Development (DFID), including serving as Transformation Director and Director for Asia, the Caribbean and Overseas Territories.
His development and diplomatic work has also taken him across several countries, including Bangladesh, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya. He began his international career working in Zimbabwe.
Reacting to his appointment, Vowles described the assignment as a privilege and highlighted Nigeria’s strategic importance to the United Kingdom.
“I am honoured to be appointed as British High Commissioner to Nigeria,” he said.
“Nigeria is a country of immense importance to the United Kingdom, and I look forward to working closely with Nigerian partners to strengthen our relationship across trade, development and security.”
His appointment comes at a time when Nigeria and the United Kingdom continue to expand bilateral cooperation in key sectors, including trade, investment, security, governance, education and economic development.
Observers say Vowles’ extensive background in diplomacy and development could further strengthen ties between both countries as they navigate shared economic and security interests.
