Prominent US conservative activist Charlie Kirk has died after being shot during an event at a university in Utah on Wednesday. Authorities confirmed that a suspect has been detained in connection with the shooting.

“The subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody. We will provide updates when able,” FBI Director Kash Patel said.

Former President Donald Trump announced Kirk’s death on Truth Social, calling him “legendary.” Trump wrote, “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me… Charlie, we love you!”

Kirk, 31, was a key voice for the younger generation of Trump’s Republican base and co-founded Turning Point USA at 18, growing it into the country’s largest youth conservative movement. He was also behind Turning Point Action, a group instrumental in Trump’s voter outreach in 2024.

Known for his confrontational style, Kirk frequently toured US universities, inviting debates that often went viral. It was during one such event in Utah that he was shot in the neck, sparking widespread condemnation across the political spectrum.

Kirk’s career was defined by staunch conservative ideology, aligning closely with Trump, promoting unverified election fraud claims, and attacking liberal policies on immigration and gender identity. His outspoken style earned him significant influence among Republicans and regular appearances on Fox News, alongside hosting “The Charlie Kirk Show,” one of America’s most popular conservative podcasts.

Critics often labeled him a “charismatic Christian nationalist,” citing his role in rallying supporters, including some who attended the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots.

Originally from the Chicago suburbs, Kirk never attended college but quickly became a central figure in Republican politics, serving as a personal assistant to Donald Trump Jr. by 2016.

Despite accusations of spreading misinformation — including unproven claims about Haitian immigrants — Kirk insisted in a 2024 AFP interview that his mission was to “spread the truth.”

Tributes continue to pour in for Kirk, remembered by supporters as a fearless voice for American conservatism.
