“I’m still the speaker”: Obasa challenges impeachment process
The embattled Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has declared that he will remain in his position until due process is followed.
Obasa’s statement follows his impeachment by the Assembly over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. The lawmakers unanimously voted to remove him during a plenary session, marking the end of his tenure as Speaker, a role he has held since 2015.
The impeachment comes amidst accusations of financial impropriety, including claims that Obasa approved the sum of N17 billion expenditure for a gate at the assembly complex.
Upon returning to Lagos after the impeachment proceedings, Obasa was received by loyalists at his residence in Joel Ogunnaike, GRA, Ikeja. Addressing supporters and journalists, he maintained his position as Speaker, asserting that his removal was not conducted according to the law.
“I strongly believe I am still the Speaker until the proper procedure is followed. If they want to remove me, let it be done the right way, and I will not contest it,” Obasa stated.
While he expressed belief in fate as a Muslim, he underscored the importance of fairness in the process. When asked whether he plans to take legal action, Obasa remained noncommittal, saying, “You will know. It’s a matter of time.”
The unfolding political drama has drawn significant attention as Lagosians await the next developments in the leadership of the state’s legislative arm.
