Fans attack match officials as Kano Pillars draw with Shooting Stars in NPFL clash
Chaos erupted at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Sunday after Kano Pillars’ Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clash against Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) ended in violence.
Trouble started when Shooting Stars scored a late equaliser, moments before the final whistle. Mustapha Jibrin had earlier put Pillars ahead in the 9th minute, but Adams Mustapha struck deep into stoppage time to level the scoreline, sparking anger among some home supporters.
Following the equaliser, several irate fans stormed the pitch, targeting the match officials with missiles and physical attacks. Viral videos on social media showed referees and players running for safety as chaos spread across the field.
Some 3SC players, including Ismail Ayodele and Adams Agba’a, sustained head injuries during the attack. Security operatives later intervened, using teargas to disperse the violent crowd and rescue the assaulted officials and players.
