Plateau launches new drive to curb gender-based violence

The Plateau State Government has kicked off a renewed campaign aimed at tackling the rising cases of gender-based violence (GBV) across the state. The initiative, launched on Monday in Jos, brings together government agencies, civil society organisations, community leaders, and law enforcement bodies to strengthen prevention and response measures.

Speaking at the flag-off event, officials said the campaign is part of efforts to intensify awareness, improve reporting channels, and ensure survivors receive timely support. The state government noted that GBV has remained a serious social challenge, affecting women, girls, and even some vulnerable men, and insisted that the trend must be reversed.

The campaign includes community outreach programmes, school engagements, training for security operatives, and partnerships with traditional institutions to promote early reporting and discourage harmful cultural practices that enable abuse.

Advocacy groups welcomed the government’s effort, saying stronger collaboration is needed to ensure survivors feel safe enough to speak out. They also called for stricter enforcement of existing laws and better support systems such as shelters, medical care, and legal aid.

With the new campaign now underway, authorities expressed optimism that sustained awareness and community involvement will significantly reduce incidents of gender-based violence across Plateau State.
