IDF recovers bodies of Militants during operations in Gaza tunnel network
The Israel Defense Forces on Friday said its troops recovered the bodies of several militants during ongoing operations targeting Hamas tunnel infrastructure in the southern Gaza Strip.
According to a statement by the military, the bodies were found inside a tunnel system uncovered near eastern Rafah, an area where Israeli forces have been conducting intensive search-and-clear missions. The army said the militants were killed during recent clashes as troops advanced through the underground passages.
The discovery adds to a series of similar findings in recent months as the IDF continues to dismantle what it describes as Hamas’ extensive network of concealed tunnels used for movement, storage of weapons, and staging attacks.
Military officials said engineering units and special forces were involved in the latest operation, which also included the destruction of tunnel shafts and the seizure of equipment allegedly belonging to Hamas operatives.
Tunnel raids have remained a central part of Israel’s campaign in Gaza since the war escalated following the October 2023 Hamas attacks. The military has repeatedly stated that eliminating the tunnel system is necessary to degrade Hamas’ operational capabilities.
The IDF said operations in the area are ongoing.
