Indonesia Flood Tragedy Deepens: 631 dead, 472 missing in Sumatra disaster
The death toll from the devastating flooding and landslides that have ravaged Indonesia’s Sumatra region has climbed to 631, according to an update released on Tuesday by the country’s disaster management agency.
The scale of the tragedy continues to deepen, with at least one million people displaced from their homes as communities struggle to cope with the aftermath.
Emergency teams, government agencies, and humanitarian organisations are scrambling to deliver relief materials to affected areas, even as rescuers intensify efforts to locate 472 people still reported missing. The floods, triggered by days of relentless rainfall, have swept through villages, flattened homes, and cut off several communities from essential services.
Authorities warn that the figures may rise as search operations continue across remote and hard-to-reach zones. For now, the focus remains on recovery, shelter, and preventing further loss of life as Sumatra battles one of its deadliest natural disasters in recent years.
