Okpebholo inaugurates AAU governing council, pledges to restore lost glory

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has inaugurated the Governing Council of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, with a strong mandate to revitalise the institution and restore its lost glory.
The inauguration, which took place at the New Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, was attended by top government officials, including Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, Secretary to the State Government Barr. Musa Ikhilor, Chief of Staff Gani Audu, former Deputy Governor Comrade Phillip Shaibu, and former Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning Prince Clem Agba, among others.
Governor Okpebholo underscored the critical role of education in driving development, stressing that AAU must reclaim its reputation as a centre of academic excellence.
“Education is the bedrock of development, and Ambrose Alli University holds a special place in Edo State, having produced some of the finest minds in Nigeria. It is our responsibility to restore its lost glory and ensure its continued existence,” he said.
Highlighting his administration’s commitment to the institution, the Governor revealed that the government had increased AAU’s monthly subvention from ₦41 million to ₦500 million.
“This is a bold step that reflects our dedication to AAU’s revival. We have also introduced special interventions to accelerate infrastructural development, ensuring that students and staff have the resources needed to thrive,” he added.
Governor Okpebholo further noted that his administration had successfully resolved challenges affecting over 100 medical students at the institution, ensuring their academic progress.
He charged the newly inaugurated Governing Council to approach their task with diligence, vision, and a sense of responsibility.
“This is your time to make a lasting impact. You have been chosen because we believe in your ability to restore AAU’s lost glory. Let us work together to reclaim its reputation as a centre of academic excellence,” he urged.
In response, Chairman of the Council, Chief Dan Orbih, expressed appreciation to the Governor for entrusting them with the task, affirming that AAU plays a crucial role in the development of Edo State.
“It is clear from your actions so far that the goal is to revitalise the university and bring it back to life,” Orbih remarked.
Other members of the newly inaugurated Council include Prof. Friday Okonofua, Prof. Steve Amiemenkharu, Hon. Lukman Muhammad, Prof. Idialu Jeremiah Uwaifo, Prof. Eric Kelly Inanemo Omogbai, and Prof. Omoruyi Ikponmwonsa Osahon.
The Governor assured the university community—management, staff, and students—of his administration’s unwavering support in advancing AAU’s future.
