Trump orders US withdrawal from 66 Global Organisations (Full List)
United States President Donald Trump has ordered America’s withdrawal from 66 international organisations, citing concerns that their operations conflict with the country’s national interests.
The decision, announced on Wednesday, affects 31 United Nations (UN) bodies and 35 non-UN organisations, following a comprehensive review directed earlier this year by the White House.
According to the presidential declaration, Trump has instructed all U.S. executive departments and agencies to take immediate steps to effect the country’s exit from the affected organisations “as soon as practicable.”
Among the notable UN agencies listed are the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
UNFPA focuses on family planning, maternal healthcare, and the prevention of gender-based violence and harmful practices such as child marriage. The United States has historically been one of the agency’s largest donors, supporting programmes across more than 150 countries.
The UNFCCC, on the other hand, coordinates global climate action, including the annual Conference of Parties (COP) meetings and international agreements such as the Paris Climate Accord. President Trump has repeatedly dismissed climate change as a “scam.”
Explaining the administration’s position, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the organisations affected by the withdrawal were found to be “redundant, mismanaged, wasteful, and poorly run,” adding that many had been captured by interests advancing agendas contrary to U.S. priorities.
“The days of billions of dollars in taxpayer money flowing to foreign interests at the expense of our people are over,” Rubio said.
Since returning to office in January, Trump has aggressively reshaped U.S. engagement with multilateral institutions. Early in his second term, he initiated the country’s withdrawal from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Paris Climate Agreement.
Weeks later, he signed executive orders pulling the United States out of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and halting all future funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
The latest withdrawals mark one of the most extensive disengagements by the United States from global multilateral frameworks in recent history, reinforcing Trump’s long-standing “America First” foreign policy doctrine.
