The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has drawn the curtain on a dramatic and unforgettable tournament, with Senegal emerging champions and several outstanding players rewarded for their brilliance across the competition.

From high-octane drama and officiating controversies to historic goal-scoring feats and heroic individual performances, AFCON 2025 delivered a spectacle that kept football fans across Africa glued to their screens.

Senegal Edge Morocco in Controversial Final

Senegal claimed their second AFCON title after edging hosts Morocco 1–0 in a tense extra-time final that will be remembered as much for its controversy as its quality.

The decisive moment came in extra time when Pape Gueye unleashed a brilliant strike that sent the Senegalese bench into wild celebrations. Morocco, who dominated large spells of the match, were left to rue a missed penalty late in regulation time, a turning point that ultimately proved costly.

Despite the disappointment, the Atlas Lions earned widespread praise for their organisation, discipline and resilience throughout the tournament.

Mané Leads Individual Honours

Senegal captain Sadio Mané capped a superb tournament by winning the Player of the Tournament (Golden Ball) award. The former African Footballer of the Year was instrumental in Senegal’s title run, combining leadership, work rate and decisive moments when it mattered most.

Morocco’s Yassine Bounou, fondly known as Bono, was named Best Goalkeeper after producing a series of match-winning saves during the competition. His calm presence and consistency between the posts were key to Morocco’s journey to the final.

Díaz Makes AFCON History

Despite Morocco falling at the final hurdle, Brahim Díaz finished as the tournament’s Top Scorer, winning the Golden Boot with five goals. In the process, Díaz etched his name into AFCON history as the first player to score in five consecutive matches at a single edition of the tournament.

Fair Play Recognition for Morocco

Morocco’s exemplary conduct on and off the pitch was also acknowledged, as they received the Fair Play Award for sportsmanship, discipline and respect for the laws of the game throughout the tournament.

As AFCON 2025 fades into history, it leaves behind memories of passion, resilience and African football at its finest — a reminder of why the continent’s biggest football showpiece continues to captivate the world.
