The Court of Appeal, Abuja, has affirmed that the Senate acted within its constitutional powers in suspending Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central over alleged misconduct.

The appellate court’s ruling validates the upper chamber’s decision, reinforcing its authority to discipline members for conduct deemed inconsistent with the rules and ethical standards governing the National Assembly.

Details of the alleged misconduct were not disclosed, but the Senate had previously invoked its disciplinary powers under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to suspend Akpoti-Uduaghan pending investigation.

The judgment is expected to set a precedent on the scope of legislative disciplinary powers, clarifying the extent to which the Senate can take action against its members without infringing on due process rights.
