Shettima says ADC backed e-transmission but struggled with digital registration

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has alleged that the online membership registration portal of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been inundated with fake identities.

Shettima also mocked the opposition party over its long-standing demand for real-time electronic transmission of election results.

The ADC had, on March 1, launched its online membership registration nationwide in preparation for the 2027 general election, in line with provisions of the amended Electoral Act.

Speaking at an interfaith breaking of fast hosted by President Bola Tinubu and attended by members of the Federal Executive Council, the vice-president claimed that the ADC’s registration portal was overwhelmed by fictitious names.

He described the party as an “Alliance for Democratic Confusion,” saying those who insisted on electronic transmission of votes could not manage their own digital membership process without being flooded by false entries.

Accusing the opposition of peddling misinformation, Shettima cited former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, stating that truth is often surrounded by a bodyguard of lies. According to him, falsehoods are driving opposition politics in the country.

The vice-president urged political officeholders to actively defend and promote the policies and achievements of the current administration as the political season gathers momentum.

He told the gathering that all appointees are political actors who must stand firmly behind the government and effectively market its record to Nigerians ahead of the next election cycle.

Shettima further asserted that the ruling party is in a stronger political position now than it was during the 2023 general election.

He also dismissed claims that state governors were being pressured to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that any governor who joins the party does so voluntarily after becoming convinced of its direction.
