Engine anomaly forced Arik Air flight diversion — NSIB report

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has disclosed that an engine anomaly triggered the emergency diversion of an Arik Air Boeing 737-700 during a scheduled flight on February 11, 2026.

The Bureau made this known in its preliminary report on the serious incident involving the aircraft with nationality and registration marks 5N-MJF, operated by Arik Air Limited.

According to a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at NSIB, Funke Arowojobe, the aircraft was flying from Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, to Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo International Airport, Port Harcourt, when the flight crew reported an abnormal engine event.

The situation prompted the activation of emergency procedures and a diversion to Benin Airport, which was identified as the nearest suitable airport.

NSIB confirmed that the aircraft landed safely and that all passengers and crew members onboard disembarked without sustaining any injuries.

The Bureau explained that the preliminary report contains factual information gathered so far, including details from the flight crew, air traffic control communications, flight recorder data and the initial examination of the aircraft.

NSIB noted that investigations into the incident are still ongoing, with further technical examinations being carried out to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the engine anomaly.

The Bureau added that the information contained in the preliminary report remains subject to further review and analysis.

According to NSIB, the final investigation report will present its conclusions and include safety recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.

The preliminary report has been made available for public download on the official NSIB website.
