JUST-IN: Gov Sanwo-Olu endorses deputy Hamzat as preferred successor

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has publicly endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, describing him as fit, prepared and capable of leading Lagos State ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Sanwo-Olu made the remarks on Monday after a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally informed the State Executive Council and key members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of his intention to contest for the governorship seat.

Speaking after the meeting, the governor said his experience working closely with Hamzat over the past seven years had proven his loyalty, integrity and competence.

He stated that the decision to support the deputy governor was unanimous among stakeholders present, adding that Hamzat was fully prepared for higher responsibility.

Sanwo-Olu also praised the political leadership in the state and acknowledged what he described as divine guidance in the unfolding succession process, stressing that the meeting reflected unity within the Lagos APC structure.

A viral video from the meeting showed the governor lifting Hamzat’s hand in endorsement after a moment of prayer, drawing applause from attendees.

The development signals an early consolidation within the Lagos APC ahead of the 2027 political cycle, as discussions around succession begin to take shape within the party’s leadership structure.
