The Federal Government has postponed the planned evacuation of Nigerian nationals from South Africa, shifting the operation to Wednesday, June 10, due to logistical challenges.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement issued on Monday. The first batch of returnees had initially been scheduled to depart on Monday.

According to the ministry, the postponement became necessary because of “unforeseen logistical considerations,” adding that arrangements are being finalised to ensure a smooth and orderly evacuation process.

Officials said the additional time would allow all operational requirements and necessary clearances to be completed before the exercise begins.

The Federal Government has been coordinating the voluntary return of Nigerians who expressed a willingness to leave South Africa following recent tensions involving foreign nationals in parts of the country.

Authorities disclosed that more than 1,000 Nigerians have already been screened and cleared under the repatriation programme, while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved five evacuation flights for the operation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that further details regarding flight schedules and arrival arrangements would be communicated once final approvals are secured.

The evacuation initiative comes amid growing concerns over anti-immigration protests and attacks targeting foreign nationals in South Africa, prompting several African governments to facilitate the return of their citizens.
