Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian footballer who tragically lost his life in Uganda last month, has been laid to rest in his hometown of Sokoto.
The burial ceremony, held on Monday, was attended by family members, friends, and representatives from the football community.
Lawal’s untimely death occurred after he fell from a shopping mall in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. He had visited the mall to meet a Tanzanian friend and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The circumstances surrounding his fall are still under investigation, with authorities reviewing CCTV footage and witness statements.
Vipers SC, Lawal’s Ugandan club, paid a heartfelt tribute to his contributions to the team. They highlighted his impact both on and off the pitch and announced that they would continue to pay his salary to his family for the next six months as a gesture of support.
Lawal, who joined Vipers SC in 2022, played a crucial role in their league title win. His passing has left a significant void in the football community, with many paying tribute to his talent and dedication to the sport.
The Nigerian government has called for a thorough investigation into the “suspicious” circumstances surrounding his death.
