FG orders VCs, Rectors, Provosts to Publish Budgets, Grants, Student Data Online by May 31

In a bid to promote transparency, accountability, and global best practices in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, the Minister of Education, Dr. Marufu Tunji Alausa, has directed all Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, and Provosts of public institutions to immediately publish key institutional data on their official websites.

The directive was contained in a statement issued by the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, and is aimed at aligning Nigeria’s higher education management system with international standards.

Under the new policy, institutions are required to disclose the following on their websites:

Annual Budgetary Allocation: Full breakdown of expenses under personnel costs, overheads, and capital expenditure.

Research Grant Revenue (Previous Year): Clearly separated into domestic sources (local industries, government agencies, foundations) and international sources (foreign institutions, development partners).

TETFund Allocation (Current Year): Total amount received, showcasing support for academic and infrastructure development.

Endowment Fund: Total value recorded at the end of the previous year, with quarterly updates required.

Total Student Population: Categorized into undergraduate and postgraduate levels for clarity on enrolment capacity.

The Ministry stressed that all this information must be displayed in a clear, accessible, and user-friendly format, allowing parents, students, and stakeholders to navigate and understand the data easily.

Federal institutions have until May 31, 2025, to comply with the directive. The Ministry also announced plans for periodic compliance reviews, with possible administrative actions against institutions that fail to update their platforms accordingly.

This policy forms part of broader reforms targeted at strengthening public trust, promoting performance-based funding, and improving Nigeria’s ranking on global education indices.

Dr. Alausa urged all heads of tertiary institutions to treat the order with “urgency and seriousness,” emphasizing that it is a vital step in uplifting the integrity and global competitiveness of Nigeria’s educational system.
