FG Applauds Cross River State’s efforts in tackling climate change

The Federal Government has lauded the Cross River State Government for its proactive efforts in addressing climate change, particularly through sustained public awareness campaigns in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON, gave the commendation in Abuja when he received the organisers and contestants of the 2025 Miss Africa Pageant, led by the reigning Miss Africa, Miss Precious Okoye, on a courtesy visit.
Senator Akume praised the State Government’s choice of “Climate Change” as the theme for the 7th edition of the pageant, describing it as both timely and commendable. He urged the contestants to leverage their influence and platforms to act as ambassadors for climate action, raising awareness about its devastating effects while promoting strategies for mitigation, particularly in the areas of food security and sustainable development.
In her remarks, Miss Precious Okoye highlighted the opportunities the Miss Africa crown has provided her in empowering women through agro-industrial initiatives. She noted that such efforts have helped integrate women more productively into society.
Also speaking during the visit, the Special Assistant to the Cross River State Governor on Tourism Development, Mr Tomas Edim Ikpeme, emphasised that the 2025 edition of the pageant goes beyond tourism promotion. He described it as a strategic platform for addressing pressing global issues, including climate change. He also formally presented an invitation to the SGF to attend the grand finale of the pageant, scheduled to take place on 20 April 2025 at the Calabar International Convention Centre.
Contestants in attendance at the courtesy visit included representatives from Algeria, Mali, Liberia, Malawi, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Botswana, Kenya, and Mozambique.
