Tinubu’s reforms boosting economy, easing poverty — Shettima
Vice President Kashim Shettima has stated that the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s government are helping to stabilise the country’s economy and reduce poverty levels nationwide.
Shettima made this known on Monday while speaking at the 2025 retreat organised for newly appointed members of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Represented by his Technical Adviser on Public Debt Management and Revenue Mobilisation, Mr. Ibrahim Natagwandu, the Vice President explained that the Federal Government is currently carrying out targeted programmes aimed at creating opportunities and improving Nigerians’ living conditions.
According to him, “This administration remains steadfast in its efforts to reposition the Nigerian economy through bold reforms aimed at reducing poverty, attracting investment, and creating an enabling environment where citizens can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development.”
He stressed the important role of RMAFC in securing the country’s fiscal stability, urging members to be guided by fairness, transparency, and a commitment to public service.
“You occupy a crucial place in our nation’s architecture. Your work directly impacts the fiscal health and cohesion of the nation. I urge you to rededicate yourselves to the aspirations of the government and the people,” Shettima added.
In his remarks, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, lauded the Federal Government for its economic decisions, admitting that while some policies had initially brought hardship, they had improved the financial position of state governments.
“I want to thank the President for the bold steps he has taken to rejig the economy,” Eno said. “Though we may have experienced some hardship from these policies, they have allowed subnational governments to receive more funds from the federation account, enabling us to carry out many projects. Without those decisions, some states would be borrowing heavily and leaving behind debts for future generations.”
Earlier, RMAFC Chairman, Mohammed Shehu, noted that the retreat was designed to properly familiarise new members with the commission’s duties and processes. He assured that the commission would work closely with relevant stakeholders to safeguard Nigeria’s fiscal future.
