President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, ahead of the 17th BRICS Summit of Heads of State and Government, which is scheduled to hold from July 6 to 7, 2025.

The president’s aircraft landed at the Galeão Air Force Base by 8:45 p.m. on Friday, where he was received by top Brazilian government officials, including the commander of the base, Brazil’s deputy minister for Africa and the Middle East, Ambassador Carlos Sergio Sobral Duarte, and the deputy minister for trade promotion, science, technology, innovation, and culture.

This was made known in a statement released on Saturday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the president, titled ‘President Tinubu Arrives In Rio De Janeiro For BRICS Meeting’. According to the statement, President Tinubu is in Brazil on the invitation of President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva.

At the summit, Tinubu is expected to attend a plenary session where he will address other world leaders on Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms and the country’s push to enhance its position in the global market. He is also scheduled to engage investors, with particular focus on attracting foreign investment in agriculture, solid minerals, healthcare, and alternative energy sectors.

The statement read in part: “At the BRICS Summit, the President will participate in a plenary session and deliver an address on Nigeria’s ongoing reforms to reposition the economy for global competitiveness. He will also attract investors to capitalise on the country’s opportunities in agriculture, solid minerals, healthcare, and alternative energy.”

Before the leaders’ summit, political negotiators from the BRICS bloc deliberated on ways to strengthen commitments towards tackling socially determined diseases, artificial intelligence governance, and climate finance, with the goal of addressing key structural challenges affecting the Global South.

Accompanying President Tinubu to Brazil are five Nigerian governors: Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), and Mohammed Umar Bago (Niger).
