NNL Super 8: Clubs jostle for NPFL tickets as day two fixtures heat up in Asaba

Football action resumed at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba on Monday as clubs competing in the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 playoffs continued their quest to secure promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

In Group B, Kun Khalifat FC and Osun United made bold statements with crucial victories over Crown FC and Warri Wolves on Saturday. All four teams in Group A, however, remain on a point each after playing out goalless draws in their opening fixtures.

The second round of matches kicked off with Yobe Desert Stars facing Doma United. Both sides were held to draws in their first games, with Yobe Desert Stars missing clear chances against Barau FC, while Doma United were equally wasteful against Wikki Tourists. Yobe, seeking a top-flight return since 2019, could not afford another slip-up, while Doma United, desperate to bounce back after last season’s relegation, knew a win would enhance their chances of securing an immediate NPFL comeback.

Barau FC took on Wikki Tourists in the other Group A encounter. Barau escaped with a point in their opener and faced a Wikki Tourists side known for their ball-playing style under coach Abdu Maikaba. Both teams were eager to improve their goal conversion rate after wasting several scoring chances on Saturday.

Kun Khalifat squared up against Warri Wolves in Group B. The Lagos-based side, in their debut NNL season, shocked Crown FC on Saturday and hoped to compound the woes of Warri Wolves, who were still nursing the wounds from their surprise loss to Osun United. Another win for Kun Khalifat would put them in a strong position for promotion.

The day’s final game was a South West derby between Crown FC and Osun United. Crown FC, led by Ayodeji Ayeni, rued missed chances in their narrow defeat to Kun Khalifat and knew anything short of victory would dim their promotion hopes. On the other hand, Osun United, brimming with confidence after stunning Warri Wolves, aimed to complete a remarkable return to the NPFL after a 17-year absence.

The playoff matches are living up to expectations, with clubs displaying determination and resilience as the race for Nigeria’s elite football division intensifies in Asaba.
