Akume: Federal Government to transform Livestock sector

The federal government has restated its resolve to revitalise Nigeria’s livestock sector as a key driver of economic growth in a move aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking at the 2024 Blueprint Impact Series and Awards Ceremony held in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON, described the livestock industry as a sleeping giant with the potential to reshape Nigeria’s economy, particularly in rural communities.
Themed “Exploring the Potentials of Livestock Exports in Nigeria”, the event gathered top government officials, media professionals, and industry experts to discuss the future of livestock and the role of media in national development.
“This theme speaks directly to our government’s focus on livestock as a tool for economic transformation,” Senator Akume said. “President Tinubu has demonstrated his commitment by creating the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, an unprecedented step aimed at harnessing the vast opportunities in this sector.”
He stressed that with the right investments, infrastructure, and trade policies, livestock could catalyse industrial growth, foreign exchange earnings, and even help resolve some of Nigeria’s longstanding socio-economic challenges.
In the same vein, Senator Akume commended Blueprint Newspaper for its contribution to nation-building through credible reporting and a strong editorial focus on unity, inclusive growth, and government accountability. He said the federal government is open to working closely with Blueprint and other responsible media platforms to amplify innovations and success stories that can inspire change across all sectors.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, expressed optimism about the future of the sector. He noted that livestock, if properly developed, could significantly boost Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and called for support from private sector players, researchers, and the media in achieving the ministry’s objectives.
“We’re not just looking to expand production,” the minister said. “We’re aiming for global competitiveness by ensuring our livestock products meet international export standards.”
In his welcome address, Salisu Umar, Managing Director of Blueprint Newspapers, traced the publication’s journey since its inception in 2011. From humble beginnings as a weekend paper, he said, Blueprint has evolved into a trusted national daily, with editions including the Manhaja Blueprint, tailored for Hausa-speaking audiences.
The event served as both a celebration of impactful journalism and a rallying call for renewed efforts in agricultural development, particularly in a sector that remains central to the livelihoods of millions of Nigerians.
For many in attendance, the message was clear: with the right policies, partnerships, and storytelling, Nigeria’s livestock sector could well become a cornerstone of national prosperity.
