BREAKING: Tinubu honours D’Tigress with National Awards, $100,000, houses after historic AfroBasket win
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has rewarded Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with national honours and substantial gifts following their stunning victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
At a reception held on Monday evening in Abuja, the President conferred the Order of the Niger (OON) on each player and announced a $100,000 cash prize and a flat for every member of the victorious squad.
The gesture was in recognition of their fifth consecutive AfroBasket Women’s Championship title, a feat no other African women’s team has achieved.
D’Tigress triumphed over Mali with a 78–64 win in the final on Sunday, extending their dominance in African basketball and sealing their seventh AfroBasket crown overall.
This move mirrors Tinubu’s earlier reward for the Super Falcons, who were recently honoured with similar national awards and benefits after clinching Nigeria’s 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco.
